Engaging with local communities about the management of contaminated land is essential, particularly for sites that are being restored, as ultimately the site will be returned to them. For nuclear sites in the UK, one aspect of this is undertaken through End State consultation, which is reviewed every five years.
Quintessa was involved in the initial consultation work at several sites, and have more recently been involved in developing the End State for its implementation at Winfrith. Engagement on interim management strategies in lieu of final restoration is also key. We have developed structured processes for looking at restoration options and understanding what is important to a broad range of stakeholders, and have also produced non-technical summaries of key information.
