UEFA Euro 2024 is heating up! The group stage has passed, which means it’s knock-out football from here, and Quintessa’s N-Estimates algorithm will be offering its predictions every step of the way.
Over the past two weeks, Quintessa’s N-Estimates algorithm for rating sports teams has been predicting results of matches at UEFA Euro 2024. There have been some surprising statistics so far; for example, typically around 20% of men’s international football matches result in draws, whereas the figure for the group stages of this competition was a huge 38%. Nevertheless, the algorithm has performed well; the correct winner was predicted in 50% of the matches (a random set of predictions would have had a success rate of only 34%), and the exact scoreline was correctly predicted in 8 matches (twice the 4-match success rate from random predictions). A more detailed analysis of these and other performance metrics will be presented following the tournament.
In an earlier article, the algorithm predicted the group winners would be Germany, Spain, England, France, Belgium and Portugal. Four of these teams did win their groups, with France falling to second place behind Austria and Belgium just missing out to Romania by virtue of having scored only two goals compared to Romania’s four.
The predictions for the knock-out stages of the competition have now been produced and are presented in Figure 1. The list of predictions will be appended to as the tournament progresses. The prediction plots indicate the likelihood levels of various possible results. The x- and y-axes represent potential numbers of goals scored by the "home" and "away" teams respectively, with the home wins below the diagonal black dashed line and away wins above (except for matches involving host nation Germany, no home advantage is applied and the designation of a “home” team is arbitrary). The colour scale represents the normalised probability of each result, with a high probability plotted in orange and a low probability in blue. The most likely result is highlighted by the black crossed-circle.
