The conference explored how the insurance industry can help overcome some of the barriers to commercialising / upscaling technologies required to prevent and mitigate climate change due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. One technology is carbon capture (utilisation) and storage (CC(U)S) and a potential barrier to its large-scale deployment is its insurability, which requires assessment of the underlying risks. The group discussion in which Richard Metcalfe was a panellist considered these risks. The Geneva Association is the only international association of insurance companies; its members are insurance and reinsurance CEOs.
