We are very pleased to announce that the paper “Modelling physical controls on mine water heat storage systems” has been selected as one of the best articles in Geoenergy, and has been invited to be presented as part of Best of Geoenergy at the EAGE Annual Conference, in Toulouse, 2-5 June 2025. Fiona Todd was lead author and the work forms part of the output of her PhD at the University of Edinburgh. The PhD was supported by a Quintessa CASE award which included Alex Bond's supervision and co-authorship of the paper.
The paper describes numerical models that were implemented to represent thermal cycling of shallow mine workings as a potential low carbon heat source and thermal storage. The work included novel thermal-hydraulic-mechanical modelling, examining, amongst other things, the stability of mine pillars under different exploitation conditions.
We’re grateful for this work to be recognised in this way given Quintessa’s commitment to supporting low-carbon energy sources.
