Quintessa is currently working with Jacobs UK to support Sellafield Limited in carrying out options studies for the management of low-level radioactive wastes (LLW) that are produced and stored on the Sellafield site. Because of pressures on capacity for the storage and disposal of LLW, there is a need to review alternatives and implications for the decommissioning and site restoration programme.
The scope includes historical arisings awaiting treatment as well as new wastes arising from risk reduction activities and the demolition of ageing facilities on the site. Our demonstrated ability to deliver high quality support, coupled with credibility as independent facilitators, were identified as key factors in awarding Quintessa and Jacobs the work under Jacobs' Environmental Service Framework Contract. As in Quintessa's ongoing work to support decision making for plutonium-contaminated wastes, our role is to provide guidance, independent facilitation, audit and assurance for the public consultation process and the associated evaluation of alternative management strategies.
