NEA Publishes Updated International FEP List

The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) has recently published Version 3.1 of its International Feature, Event and Process (IFEP) List that can be used in the safety assessment of radioactive disposal facilities. It is available in two formats: as a PDF report; and via an online database which is designed to store the IFEP List and other project-specific FEP lists in an easily navigable and searchable format. Quintessa has provided key contributions in both the production of the updated report and the development and enhancement of the online database.

The online NEA FEP database has been designed to provide a home for all releases of the IFEP List and can also host project-specific FEP (PFEP) Lists. Currently four such PFEP Lists have been published: the NAGRA Opalinus Clay (OPA) FEP List, 2002; the ONDRAF/NIRAS FEP List; the ONDRAF/NIRAS FEP List – Near surface disposal at Dessel (cAt project); and the SKB PSAR SFK List. The application provides version control and review and approval processes, and can support defining relationships between FEPs including between PFEP and IFEP Lists. The application has an administrative interface through which the NEA and member organisations can manage their FEP lists, and a public facing interface through which published versions of the FEP Lists and links between them can be viewed in a read-only format.

Quintessa has supported the NEA by:

  • enhancing the functionality of the database software;
  • updating the database software to account for changes to the server environment and supporting software libraries;
  • proposing and implementing revisions to the previous IFEP List in light of a review of relevant FEP lists and technical references published since 2019; and
  • implementing the updated IFEP List in the updated web-based database.
The user interface has: a header panel with breadcrumbs and search box for navigation; an expandable tree view with the FEP hierarchy and highlighting the current FEP (the International FEP List root FEP is highlighted), and; a panel providing details of the FEP (a description of the International FEP List is shown).
