Michael Egan supported a successful recent IAEA workshop on radioactive waste management held in Amman, Jordan (15-19 July 2012). The aim of the workshop was to provide training and guidance on principles, requirements and best practice in safety management issues and safety case development relating to the development of a LLW disposal facility in Iraq.
Participants represented leadership roles in the organisation responsible for radioactive waste management in Iraq as well as the corresponding regulatory body. Key outcomes included the clarification of goals in relation to the development of policy, strategy (including regulatory strategy) and detailed planning for long-term waste management in support of the Iraqi Decommissioning Project. There was also recognition of the need to define corresponding institutional responsibilities surrounding the planning, licensing and safe implementation of waste treatment and disposal, including the development of effective independent centres of competence in both the operator and regulatory body. Effective team work with the co-presenter of the course, Vincent Nys (FANC, Belgium), as well as the IAEA staff responsible for planning and hosting the meeting, was key to its success.
