Richard Little was invited by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to undertake an expert mission to the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) based in Accra in December 2009.
The purpose of the mission was to review GAEC’s progress in implementing the borehole disposal concept for the disposal of disused sealed sources in Ghana. The mission included a three-day training workshop on post-closure safety assessment of radioactive waste disposal, including the borehole disposal concept. Twelve participants attended the workshop from the National Nuclear Research Institute, the Ghana Geological Survey and the Radiological Protection Institute. The source and site characterisation plans were also reviewed during the mission and recommendations made to the GAEC and IAEA on the future development of the IAEA-supported project.
